HUD Releases FAQ on Positive Rent Reporting
By: Tushar Gurjal, Senior Policy Manager
On January 17, HUD sent an email to housing agency executive directors informing them of a new frequently asked questions (FAQ) document on positive rent reporting. Positive rent reporting is the process of reporting a tenant’s on-time rent payments to credit consumer bureaus to help establish credit history for the resident and help build a resident’s credit.
The FAQ covers a variety of topics:
- It describes what positive rent reporting is and discusses how PHAs may implement it;
- It discusses the research around positive rent reporting, including past HUD publications and the work done by the Moving to Work Asset Building Cohort; and
- Finally, the FAQ provides links to resources to learn more about positive rent reporting.
The FAQ notes that HUD-assisted property owners–including housing agencies, Housing Choice Voucher program landlords, owners with project-based rental assistance, and owners of properties that received other HUD assistance (e.g., Section 202 or Section 811) may share positive rent payment data subject to certain conditions.
Additional questions may be sent to PublicHousingPolicyQuestions@hud.gov.
