NAHRO CEO Mark Thiele Issues Statement on Inflation Reduction Act

While NAHRO and our members applaud the many vital elements of the Inflation Reduction Act, we are puzzled and deeply disappointed as to what is not included: funding for affordable housing options across our nation. Affordable housing is one of our most fundamental needs as people. Housing is infrastructure. It is also one of the key drivers of inflation.

NAHRO’s nearly 20,000 members are first responders to the nation’s growing affordable housing crisis. Our members provide homes and vital supportive services to millions of families in cities, rural areas, suburbs, towns and tribal lands. They work with local and federal partners to build sustainable solutions for their communities. They are also tireless advocates who push affordable housing to the forefront of issues in Congress.  In 2021, NAHRO members sent over 60,000 letters to Congress and the White House to encourage investments in our nation’s affordable housing programs. As a result, programs administered by NAHRO members have gotten more attention than ever before. Though the Inflation Reduction Act passed without funding for these critical programs, NAHRO has and will continue to push these issues forward while working to cultivate future housing champions.

We are midway through our annual August advocacy campaign. I call on all NAHRO members to continue to speak out loudly for our programs and your residents. We must fight to ensure that housing is included in the next legislative opportunity – let your voice be heard now by sending letters to your legislators.

While this legislation is a lost opportunity to provide much-needed relief to Americans in need of safe, decent, affordable homes, we will continue to push lawmakers to do better in the future.  We must: millions of families are counting on it.
