Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh Wins Award of Excellence for Project Design
(Washington D.C.-Nov. 17, 2020)- The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh is a recipient of a 2020 Award of Excellence for Project Design by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) for its redevelopment success with the Standstone Quarry Apartments.
“This year’s award-winning agencies have given us innovative local solutions for increasing affordable housing stock and improving the lives of their residents,” NAHRO President Sunny Shaw said. “I am excited to honor them for their excellence.”
The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP) was vital in completing the project at Sandstone Quarry Apartments, from serving as developer, to financial lender to leading community engagement efforts. Sandusky Court, later renamed to Sandstone Quarry Apartments, formed the lowest tier of Allegheny Dwellings public housing community in the Fineview neighborhood. The site had significant topographical challenges with steep rock formation and slopes. A master planning process with extensive public outreach ensued, resulting in a project that optimizes on site strengths in embracing and enhancing local context. It connects a formally isolated public housing development to the larger community through amenities, such as hiking trails, giving residents access to public transportation and neighboring businesses.
