NAHRO Congratulates HUD, Housing Providers on MTW Expansion

 On August 28, HUD took a critical next step in the expansion of its most innovative housing initiative. The Moving to Work (MTW) program provides local housing authorities with the opportunity to design and test innovative, locally designed strategies to use public funding more efficiently, help residents become self-sufficient, and increase housing choices for low-income families. Thirty-nine local housing authorities currently participate in the program.  Recently, HUD invited 80 more housing authorities to apply for this significant designation. HUD’s goal is to expand the program to 100 high-performing local housing authorities over seven years.  

“We’ve seen that giving Housing Authorities flexibilities to care for their vulnerable populations under the Moving to Work Demonstration has led to excellent results for low-income families,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson in a previous release.  

Eligible PHAs can now submit complete applications under the first two cohorts of the MTW expansion. Future cohorts will be announced soon.  

“This seemingly small action is actually a huge step in moving the entire assisted housing industry forward,” said NAHRO CEO Adrianne Todman. “The agencies that currently have this special designation have informed how affordable housing can truly be a platform to help families and bolster the local economy.  NAHRO is thrilled that more local communities will have the opportunity to shape their housing programs to meet their local needs.”
