NAHRO CEO’s Statement on CDC Eviction Moratorium

On September 2, NAHRO CEO Adrianne Todman issued the following statement:

“Yesterday afternoon, the CDC and HHS pre-released an order that would halt residential evictions of any covered tenant for failure to pay rent. While we are appreciative that the Administration has sought to protect the ability of millions of renters to remain in their homes during a public health crisis, this is not enough. NAHRO demands that Congress act soon to provide sorely needed rental assistance to these families, and to others who may need rent relief in the future.

“Rental assistance is critical – not just for impacted renters, but also for property owners who need to keep their rental units safe and in good condition, and who need to pay their property taxes and mortgages.

“NAHRO also calls on Congress and the White House to approve the additional assistance proposed in both the HEROES and HEALS bills to support families who live in assisted housing. The protracted pandemic continues to challenge resources available to support families residing in public housing and in homes supported by the Section 8 program. Also, the new order’s requirement that a family “must have used best efforts to obtain all government assistance for rent or housing” may further strain local housing agencies as families seeking coverage under the new moratorium try to comply.

“Our nation’s housing stability hangs in the balance. The time to act is now.”
