NAHRO CEO’s Statement on the RNC Public Housing Video
A version of this statement originally appeared on Twitter.
“Last night, residents who live in NYC public housing spoke during the Republican national convention. First, it is always empowering when residents have a platform to share their truth! And it was good to see them and to hear them affirm the positive changes underway in their communities.
“Next, no single person is to blame for the history of disrepair of public housing units, and no single person can take credit when change occurs. NYC has committed local funding for repairs, and Congress has increased federal funding for public housing nationwide, notwithstanding HUD’s proposed budgets to zero out funding for major public housing programs. The team at the NYC Housing Authority, and housing agencies everywhere, work hard every day to put their funding to work. But with a national $70 billion-plus capital backlog, it is a struggle.
“Finally, waiting lists for housing are long because federal funding to house new families is severely limited, not because undocumented immigrants are living with family members. That is why NAHRO supports universal vouchers and programs to build new housing. Now.”
